Grid bot update ask too much of base

Hey gainium,

Just had something that looks weird to me.
I have a simple grid bot and wanted to update spacing in percent from 0,6 to 0,66 not updating anything else.

It asked for restart and also asked to buy more base. So it buy 20% bass more about and now only use about 80% of it which is dumb and not expected (bought the difference and not the full amount).

I don’t think it’s required, I don’t get it and it was mandatory to either buy full amount or difference. But calculation was wrong somewhere coz it moved from nearly 100% use of base to now about 80%.

Another weird thing also discovered is that it might consume more than 100% of base, which I also don’t really understand.

The bot is using EUR from binance as quite.

Bug details:

  • Bot URL → Gainium app
  • [Optional] Steps to reproduce → update grid spacing in percent / level
  • Expected result → don’t ask new base or very few

Hello! Thank you for reporting this bug. We have received your report regarding the grid bot update asking for too much base currency, and we appreciate you providing the bot URL.

We understand your concern about the unexpected base currency consumption and the discrepancy in the percentage of base used. Your detailed explanation and the provided bot URL (Gainium app) are very helpful.

We will investigate this issue thoroughly and update you shortly with our findings and a resolution.

It’s seldomly a good idea to change spacing or volumes of a running grid bot. Only the range for grid levels may be extended as that’s what trailing and expanding grids of other bit providers can do.

Better create a new grid bot if you want to change the first two settings.

Why not? Not the first time I do that (but first time with EUR as quote).

The range never change or I close and create a new one (kind of life cycle of my carefully selected ranges).

It is just supposed to use the same quote and use existing balance, I don’t see why I should avoid. Just that today, it asked me for more base, can’t be coz of change price during the change. Didn’t do a stop start to avoid down time.

Edit :
This order at restart bought “too much”, but I will convert it to hodl :face_with_monocle:

Changing the distance or volume of grid levels fundamentally changes the configuration of the bot so that the order sizes don’t match what the grid has previously bought or sold. The bot will have to buy additional funds at the current price in order to execute the pending orders. But then the pending orders are working with assets that were bought at different prices, so the profit calculation isn’t correct anymore. The only way to deal with those changes would be to close the Grid Bot and realize it’s current unrealized gains and losses and start with a new Grid Bot and correct stats.

I really think that it could avoid that, mainly coz with decimal, no need to buy that much if it needs more at the end.

Maybe we should provide a do nothing option and not force buying. So that the user will fix a later issue if not enough fund manually avoiding that big buy?

I can see the issue.
There could be a bit of difference in the overall balance, because of changed grid step, and as consequence grid levels.
The difference calculated on frontend based on current balance and then executed on the server side.
I cannot reproduce it locally. I assume that balance on the frontend was incorrect. I suggest next time to check balance in the dialog and compare it to the reail balance. If there will be discrepancy, you cna go to the exchanges page and force update balances

Before and as usual since I already had balance issue, I update balance of exchange and so should had been OK. We speak of 200+ euro on a 2k euro bot, that’s 10% of the bot, it’s not a few.

Maybe there was still a balance issue, I can’t confirm it by myself now. But if this could happens, then let the user chose and add a use existing balance (do nothing) instead of forcing us to buy full amount or diff which both are not what I needed here.

It bought 2 SOL for nothing, can’t be a decimal issue, maybe balance but it would surprise me.

It’s not the first time I I’m doing that, but as it failed here, that’s why I wanted to talk about it :innocent:.

A third option use existing balance would be enough for me, coz using existing balance, it would had enough for sell side (I guess, didnt do calculation). My strategy on grids usually end up by manual but sell but only when I close and open a new grid (meaning new range). Same range, then nothing to be done normally.

Imagine option to reuse balance, either it will be OK or fail coz not enough balance (where calculation failed somewhere). It error and partial grid, I could buy more manually and restart and fixed. The never block the user could be a quick fix even if a real problem exists in balance or in calculation for any reason. The bot balance will help once grid is started, what ever if base is missing or not.

Yes, so this could be due to not acccurate balance info used in calcualtion

Grid bot order size calculation more complicated than simple DCA, so there could be slightly changes of the overall balance after bot edit, due to settings, rounding etc.

There is actually that option, and its shown if your balance is enough.

If it will happen again, can you please take a screenshot of the update windod, current balances, then force update balances and take screenshots again.

What are the reasons to change a running grid bot and most likely ruin the stats instead of (closing the old one and) adding a new one? Unlike separate DCA deals, the whole grid works as a single deal with many internal orders that depend on each other.

So I don’t confirm the presence of use existing balance for restart (but will recheck next time, weird).

The reason to change grid interval is purely related to profitability. If I have real problems, I might stop and create another one.

Thanks for your help, let’s see how this reappears next time.
