Newbie question - Bybit Maker Fees Consuming ~22% of Combo Bot Profits – Is This a Major Obstacle? - side effect combo bot for next 4+ years :-)

Hello everyone,

I recently analyzed the impact of Bybit’s 0.1% maker fee on my combo trading bot and found that the fees are consuming approximately 22.1% of my profits. Here’s a brief overview of my setup and findings:

  • Bot Strategy: Combo Bot (utilizing grid trading with DCA orders)
  • Investment Per Grid: Portion of my frozen funds (referred to as equity)
  • Profit Generation: The bot is achieving around 0.1% profit per day

I understand that fees are an inherent part of trading, but I’m seeking insights or suggestions on how to mitigate their impact to make my bot more competitive and profitable.

Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Wow seriously? Would that be the same on KuCoin with 0.1% fees too?

I think it is the same for all exchanges because 0.1% is not from profit but from amount:

Investment (USDT) Gross Profit (USDT) Total Fees (USDT) Net Profit (USDT) Fees as % of Gross Profit
5 0.045 0.010 0.035 ~22.1%
50 0.455 0.101 0.354 ~22.1%
100 0.909 0.201 0.708 ~22.1%

Thats for 50 usdt dca 5 usdt grid by 1% and go down 1% and go up 1% from 100k bitcoin so typical buy low sell high rhytm. I buy and sell 5 USDT so it is 0.01 fee (twice 0.005) and my profit on 1% change of bitcoin price is 0.045 USDT because I am paying from amount 5 USDT and from my profit 4.5 cents those 0.1% (twice 0.1% from 5 USDT because i made operation buy here first fee and sell here second fee) effectively i pay 22% like TAX or whatever :-). Just came hour ago to this heh. Looks like we need to bit the bullet anyway no chance to avoid. The more we use exchange then we pay more

Ok to expand this I made analysis how many successes I need to have same as buy and hold bitcoin if bitcoin will raise from 100k to 200k. I used formula:

  1. Summary
  • Starting BTC: 100K
  • Target BTC: 200K
  • Net profit per grid cycle (after 22.1% fees): 0.7%
  • Each cycle: 1% down, 1% up
  1. Formula is correct:
  • Final = Initial × (1 + 0.007)^N
  • 200K = 100K × (1 + 0.007)^N
  • 2 = (1.007)^N
  • N = ln(2) / ln(1.007) ≈ 99.3 trades
  1. Verification: 100K × (1.007)^100 ≈ 200,183 USDT

So we need 100 hits to go to 200k so have same performance.

And to be sure you understand what I mean. My crypto bot will generate

5 usdt. It is same as I buy 5 USDT at 100k BTC and hold it till it hits 200K BTC.

Ok.Now i like to be most good for combo bot to confirm my gainium 200USDT investment :-). Scenario is the same. BTC 1% combo bot. 50USDT DCA and 5USDT grid. Now lets look different scenarios where DCA 50USD kicks in as well and I compare invested by combo bot total sum to buy and hold the same:

Analysis of Combo Bot vs Buy & Hold Performance

Lets analyze a combo bot with these settings:

  • Grid trades: 5 USDT
  • DCA orders: 50 USDT each
  • Grid spacing: 1%
  • Total potential capital: ~450 USDT

Let’s compare different scenarios and see when the Gainium combo bot shines compared to simply buying and holding the same amount:

Scenario 1: Sideways Market (95K-105K)

  • Total capital used: 55 USDT
  • Combo bot: +3.8% (+2.1 USDT)
  • Buy & Hold: 0% (0 USDT)
  • Winner: Combo Bot

Scenario 2: Down & Up (100K→80K→100K)

  • Total capital used: 205 USDT (multiple DCAs triggered)
  • Combo bot: +15.2% (+31.1 USDT)
  • Buy & Hold: 0% (0 USDT)
  • Winner: Combo Bot

Scenario 3: Straight Up (100K→200K)

  • Total capital used: 55 USDT
  • Combo bot: +53.6% (+29.5 USDT)
  • Buy & Hold: +100% (+55 USDT)
  • Winner: Buy & Hold

Interesting findings:

  1. Combo bot excels in volatile markets
  2. Works great when DCA kicks in during dips
  3. Provides consistent small profits even sideways
  4. Only underperforms in straight-up markets

Would love to hear others’ experiences with different settings and scenarios!

To make some final summary it looks like best for this kind of combo bot is to start at absolute worst time - ATH and then work all the way to the next ATH heh
So maybe I found my bot I ike to run for next years heh. Quite surprising I must say.

Start: BTC 100K (ATH)
Bottom: BTC 20K

  • Used all DCAs
  • Average entry maybe 40K
    New ATH: BTC 200K
  • Position doubled in value
  • PLUS all grid trading profits
  • PLUS better average entry than buy & hold

Regarding the mini grids you miss an important point. They are arithmetically spaced. That is, the percentual distance between the grid lines isn’t the same. At least, if you use DCA orders without mini grid levels you can find a setting that they are geometrically spaced.

Also the described scenarios don’t explain what those numbers come from.

A solution for me to the fees of a combo bot or grid bot is if gainium would connect to Mexc since it has 0 fees as a maker.
I think it is 0 fees on futures and some spot pairs, but in the long run it would be reflected in the profit.
I hope gainium gives opportunities to commission-free exchanges in the future

Fees and slippage are a major drawdown of combo bots.
Slippage you can counter by not having a TP .
Fees is unavoidable

You are right, the combo is best in volatile and down markets compared to a DCA, but is not a magic pill remember that if there is a sharp decline you will be holding a negative P&L for weeks or months. Personally I find that the negative uP&L doesn’t bother much these days, after going through a full cycle I’ve learned to be patient. Also a positive psychological effect of the combo is that you know that even when the unrealized P&L is negative the bot is still making small consistent profits.

Many thanks for all your great comments! I’ve fallen in love with Gainium’s combo bot and have learned a ton in the last few days. Let me share my understanding of different strategies:

Trading Strategy Breakdown:

  • Pure DCA: Just buying at lower prices, no selling
Note: In Gainium DCA is actually “Buy the Dip” strategy not real DCA buy where
we buy in time intervals. So DCA in combo bot is a little misleading.
  • Grid Bot: Small buy-sell cycles (like 1% moves) for quick profits
  • Combo Bot: Combines both approaches cleverly
    • On downtrends: Works like DCA (buying only)
    • On uptrends: Creates mini grids above entry for profit-taking
  • Combo Bot with Active Minigrids: Most engaging option!
    • Always active in both directions
    • Creates trading opportunities even between DCA levels
    • No “dead zones” where bot does nothing

The tradeoff? Exchange fees (0.1%) eat about 22% of our profits. But for someone who enjoys watching their bot actively trade, the combo bot with active minigrids is incredibly fun to watch and manage.

I’m currently running various backtests to optimize settings. While other strategies might show better pure profit potential, the combo bot with active minigrids provides the most engaging trading experience.

Big THANK YOU to everyone for the support, and Happy Holidays to all!

P.S. Special shoutout to those who helped me understand these strategies better! :rocket:
